Where did the idea for Speaking Latino come from?
From my personal experiences with learning Spanish, living in Latin America and traveling throughout Spanish speaking countries. For a more in depth explanation you can go to About Jared.
Is Speaking Latino a dictionary of Spanish-English translations?
Speaking Latino is not a comprehensive dictionary. You will not find words with their generic definitions here. For instance, the word hombre means pretty much the same any where, so you will not find hombre with the definition man. However, in Spain hombre is also often used for something like dude, as in “Dude, what do you think?” or in Spanish “Hombre, ¿que piensas?”
You will also find common words in English that have different translations in various countries. For example, the word kite in English has several Spanish translations, depending on the country, so the words for kite will be included.
Where do the words come from?
- My own personal experiences with Spanish.
- Other people that contribute words to the website.
- When I am researching a new book I look at what is available on the web, see if any books are available and travel to the country to learn the local slang.
How accurate are the words on the website?
That actually depends. The words and phrases that I have personally verified will be the most accurate. In each case I verified the word/phrase with at least one native speaker, but more often, more than one person. These words are marked with a
.
Words that are contributed by other users have not been independently verified. Please take this into account as you use these words.
Why should I create a user ID?
There are several benefits to you for creating a user ID, and logging in each time you use Speaking Latino’s website. Here are some:
- You can participate in special offers, drawings and previews of products.
- It is the only way to contribute words to Speaking Latino
- Soon, you will be able to track the number of words you contribute to the website, and to be ranked in our Contributor Hall of Fame.
- Assuming you are interested in helping, I may contact you for questions I may have related to your country, region or town. Also, while I travel it is helpful for me to meet with you and get some feedback about the website, books and teaching materials.
Are there language CDs or other learning materials available to help learn Spanish?
Currently, electronic flashcards for use with software such as ANKI (http://ichi2.net/anki/) are available, as well as several books (in print and PDF versions). While no CDs or audio language tools are currently available, future plans include placing audio and video clips directly on the website. These will allow you to hear native speakers as they pronounce words and phrases.
I would like to contribute several words, but typing them in one by one is too long. Is there some way to submit a group of words at once?
You should contact me directly at Jared@SpeakingLatino.com. Please note that this is only available for registered users of Speaking Latino.
