The Spanish mistake in this sign is extremely subtle. With only four words there’s not a lot of room for errors. In fact, there’s a small hint in one of the smaller signs around the main sign.
Give up? Ready for the hint? The small sign at the bottom of the photo says “Welcome to Key West”. I took this picture in Key West, Florida. That’s the hint.
Ready for the answer? This Quick Quiz may have been a bit tricky for you. The sign itself, with no other information given, is grammatically correct. The error only becomes obvious when you know where the sign is located. This sign is meant to point out that Cuba is only 90 miles away. For this reason it should read “90 Millas a Cuba” as the preposition “a” is correctly translated as “to” as in “to Cuba”. The “de” preposition does not work here as the sign would read “90 Miles from Cuba”. Being located in Key West, this is an incorrect construction of the sentence.
