What is an AFTER OFFICE in Argentina?

If you have ever been to Argentina and spent a little time around the locals, it is likely you have heard the phrase "after office". This is particularly true if you were there living or working as this is a term often used by professionals. So what does the term after office really mean?

After Office

If you take the literal meaning of "after office" it is obviously something to occur after you are in the office. It turns out that an "after office" is a happy hour.

The fun thing about this term is that most Argentines believe that "after office" comes from English. Try to explain to them that this phrase has no meaning in English and they will be confused. In fact, they may not even believe you. For them, the term is as clear and obvious as "happy hour" is for a native English speaker.

So next time you are invited to an "after office", just accept the invitation and have fun with your colleagues as you practice your Argentina Spanish. You might even buy everyone a round of drinks.
