What to teach in September in the Spanish Classroom?
For your Spanish 1 students, start with the basic lessons. In Spanish 2, you’ll teach gender and nouns, prepositions, and both negative and affirmative words, plus the verb “TENER.”
Spanish 3 will be a bit more challenging, with irregular preterit verbs, the imperfect tense, estar + participle, and indirect object pronouns.
And for your AP Spanish students, continue with the unit on “La Familia,” exploring values, customs, economic themes, social networks, and self-esteem.
If you’re heading back to the classroom in September, I’ve re-added the links for the beginning of the year kit and the Preliminary Lessons.
Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is a must-do celebration for Spanish classes, but it always comes so early in the year when you are still gaining traction with your routines and students.
It’s especially challenging with novice students who still don’t have the language skills to do all the cool things you’d like. But don’t worry—you’ll have plenty of resources to keep your students engaged all month! 🎉
Start with the presentation that highlights why this month is so important, complete with facts about Hispanics in the U.S. to spark some great discussions.
You can use YouTube videos showcasing stories and cultural aspects from all the Spanish-speaking countries to make classes more interesting. I’ve curated a list of 🎥 playlists for you to start exploring.
There are also printable sheets with 30 short bios of outstanding Hispanic figures to highlight during the month.
Your students can also check out full biography decks and activities on influential Hispanics, like aerospace engineer Bonnie Prado Pino or the famous author Mario Vargas Llosa, and maybe even choose someone to research and present on.
Can’t wait to see how you bring these resources to life in your classroom!
