ESTAMPILLA or SELLO? Spanish Language Words for STAMP

STAMP. This simple word becomes complex when translated into Spanish. Spanish differences give us two possible words.

Spanish Language Words for STAMP

I remember learning estampilla in my early studies for STAMP. Only when I began to travel did I learn that another option exists. The other option I know of is sello.

Generally estampilla will get the idea across, especially if you are standing in the post office, with a letter and coins in hand. Sello is a bit more iffy since some countries will not understand it to be the letter postage and it has several other meanings. These include an official stamp such as a passport stamp or a notary stamp as well a seal something, like a jar.

There is no quick guideline here to decide which word to use. It is simply a question of trial and error.

Any other words for STAMP or meanings for estampilla or sello?
