ANDAR A LO GRINGO: Chile Spanish Slang Expression

ANDAR A LO GRINGO: Chile Spanish Slang Expression

Many of you know my story: I am a gringo that learned Spanish as an adult and ended up living in Latin America for more than a decade… Chile was one of those stops.

So, when I heard the Chile Spanish slang expression andar a lo gringo I thought it was a funny one. This Spanish phrase means “to not wear underwear” or the equivalent of “going commando” in English. The phrase can be use in reference to a man or woman. Another Chilean expression with the same meaning is andar a poto pelado (poto is the butt in Chilean Spanish).

Do you know why gringos end up with the reputation of not wearing underwear in Chile?
