Translating 54 Sport Spanish Words to English

While you may imagine that all Spanish speakers only care about fútbol (soccer), you will find the occasional need to discuss other sports. Here’s some Spanish sports words that will be useful.

Translating 54 Sport Spanish Words to English

1. Fútbol / Balompié – Soccer

2. Hockey / Hockey sobre césped / Hockey sobre hierba – field hockey. In Argentina, they are big field hockey fans, so they refer to it as simply “el hockey.” This confused me at first, as I am a big fan of ice hockey, but to distinguish them you’ll need to use the term “hockey sobre hielo” for ice hockey, which is (for obvious reasons) not very popular at all in Latin America. It’s important to note that the “h” is actually pronounced in “hockey” as it is a foreign word.

3. Baloncesto/El Básquet/Básquetbol – Basketball. In textbooks you’ll learn “baloncesto” but it’s not uncommon to hear “el básquet” or “básquetbol” instead.

4. Fútbol americano – American Football

5. Beísbol – baseball, pelota

6. Squash – squash

7. Golf – golf
