DEJAR LA ESCOBA: Chile Spanish Slang Phrase at Disney’s

DEJAR LA ESCOBA: Chile Spanish Slang Phrase at Disney’s

DEJAR LA ESCOBA: Chile Spanish Slang ExpressionOn a recent trip to Disney World in Orlando I ran across these dancing brooms at the entrance to Hollywood Studios. Even before the recollection of Fantasia jumped into my brain, the typical Chilean phrase dejar la escoba popped up.

It is a common phrase for Chileans and means to screw things up or to make a mess of things. Apropos when you think of the whole messiness of Fantasia and the brooms multiplying and multiplying. These brooms appearing were great timing as I just received the drawing you see here to include in the US version of my book Speaking Chileno: A Guide to Spanish from Chile, which hit the bestseller list in Chile during 2010.

What are the odds Walt Disney had the same thought and put those brooms there to remind us of this entertaining Chilean Phrase?
