Colloquial language is full of sayings and English is not the exception. If you are in the process of learning Spanish, I have great news for you! Here is my list of English sayings in Spanish that you can use a reference resource. Why? In many cases, popular sayings cannot just be translated literally. In fact, if you do that you might end up getting an expression that makes no sense. At the same time, many are similar enough that if you learn them with slight changes, you can quickly increase your ability to express ideas in Spanish.
There are English sayings that are similar in Spanish:
During my 10 years living in Puerto Rico I was able to collect popular sayings in Spanish and match them with an English equivalent. Other materials on the web start from the Spanish saying and give you an English translation. And that’s OK if you are native Spanish speaker or know the Spanish saying you are looking for. But if your native language is English what you need is the inverse: the English saying with the equivalents Spanish sayings.

This list and all the illustrations that are featured were originally published as an appendix of my book Speaking Phrases Boricua: A Collection of Wisdom and Sayings from Puerto Rico. Although you will find Puerto Rican sayings in this list, many of these sayings, proverbs, refranes, modismos or idioms are also used in other Latin American countries.
